"When I Retire" is inspired by a conversation with a friend about the uncertainty and challenge of retirement. It reminded me of an experience I had when I was in Italy, where I met an 85 year old sculptor who created art every day and even went windsurfing, despite his wife’s concerns. His vitality and passion for life made me reflect on the importance of staying active both physically and mentally and how crucial connection and community are to living fully.
The women in this piece capture that spirit. Their boldness, vivacity, and self-assuredness are drawn from an image I once saw in National Geographic, which I felt compelled to recreate. They represent a vision of aging that embraces life, and I thought to myself: When I retire, I want to be like them.
